Oak

The Latin name for the most common tree species in Balaam's wood is Quercus robur. The Oak is a part of the Fagaceae family and can grow up to 40m tall. The leaves are 10 cm long with 5 deep lobes which have smooth edges, they have barely any stems and grow in bunches, the leaves come out mid-may.

Their flowers are long, yellow hanging catkins, which distribute pollen into the air. The acorns are 2-2.5cm long, and as they ripen, they go from green acorns to brown, which loosens and falls.

The Oak supports 2,300 species, which is more life than any other native tree species in the UK. They are common in southern and central Britain. The species they support include insects, mammals like squirrels and birds.
